A framework for evaluating the implementation and impact of the Smart Agri Plan across the Western Cape farming sector.
The Smart Agri Plan Evaluation provides a structured framework for measuring progress toward the plan's goals and objectives. The evaluation is conducted annually in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, GreenCape and participating research institutions.
The evaluation framework tracks adoption rates of smart practices, environmental outcomes, economic returns to farmers, and the overall effectiveness of programme support and investment across the Western Cape.
Findings are published annually as part of the Smart Agri Barometer and in standalone evaluation reports available in the Publications Library.
Western Cape Smart Agri Plan — evaluation period 2024
Annual structured surveys conducted with participating farmers across the Western Cape to assess practice adoption and economic outcomes at farm level.
Environmental indicators including soil carbon, water use efficiency and biodiversity metrics are tracked on participating farms using standardised monitoring protocols.
Qualitative interviews with farmers, extension officers, researchers and programme partners to assess broader programme effectiveness and learning outcomes.
Farm-level and sector data is benchmarked against the Smart Agri Barometer baseline to track year-on-year trends in smart practice adoption.
Evaluation findings are reviewed by an independent panel of agricultural researchers and sector experts before publication.
A full evaluation report is published annually and made available in the Publications Library, alongside a plain-language summary for farmers.
